Frequently Asked Questions

What do you look for in a bootblack and/or barber?

  • Bootblacks must have a firm grasp on doing a basic black polish shine and experience working with garments. Those with more specialized skills, such as farrier services or latex care, are often in high demand. In terms of pace, bootblacks should be able to complete a shine in 30 minutes.

  • Barbers must offer a skill that can serve a variety of people. Previous barbers have offered clipper cuts, razor shaves, pet grooming, and body care services. Experience with a range of hair types is strongly preferred. In terms of pace, barbers should be able to complete a haircut within an hour.

  • For both bootblacks and barbers, we look for folks who are comfortable working in crowds and excited to connect with the community!

Do I have to donate my tips?

  • Bootblacks and barbers at IMsLBB keep 100% of their tips. If you’d like to donate, however, proceeds will go toward the IMsLBB ASL Team.

Am I required to work with anyone who walks up?

  • No. Please include any concerns or preferences about guests in your stand/chair in your response to the question about accommodations on the application. Note: any requested accommodation stemming from an oppressive mindset – one that perpetuates non-consensual dynamics between marginalized groups and their counterparts – will not be accepted. For specific instances of harm, please provide details in the designated section.

I’m concerned that ticket prices will go up by the time I hear back about my application. What should I do?

  • To guarantee the most affordable ticket price, we encourage everyone to buy tickets as now and request a refund if they are offered a spot. Exceptions can be made on a case by case basis.

I’m a bootblack titleholder. Can I have extra stand time or only work during peak hours?

  • Some priority is given to previous IMsBB titleholders. However, all bootblacks - including titleholders - must follow the same application and scheduling process.

Can people in line specifically request me as their bootblack/barber?

  • Guests may sign up for a specific bootblack/barber by talking with the line management volunteer during that bootblack/barber shift, or by scheduling a time in advance with the bootblack/barber directly. Bootblacks will be given a limited number of “appointment slots” to ensure that walk-up customers can still receive service.

Will there still be an opportunity for me to work the stands if I don’t apply beforehand?

  • Yes! There will be multiple stands available for use throughout the event. Bootblacks picking up stand time on their own do not receive a discount on their registration, will not be promoted before the event, do not have a set schedule, and may have to forfeit their stand for event purposes. They will otherwise be treated the same as scheduled bootblacks and held to the same standard in regards to sharing the space and community care.
